Google has announced the second cohort of the Google News Initiative (GNI) Startup Labs in India, partnering with Anymind Group and T-Hub.
The program spans three months and aims to assist early-stage Indian news startups in achieving financial and operational sustainability.
Out of over 100 applicants across India, ten news startups were selected for the program, covering various journalism categories in multiple Indian languages.
These startups represent diverse areas of journalism, including investigative, political, medical, youth, climate, and local news, aiming to provide a voice to underrepresented communities.
The selected newsrooms operate in various Indian languages such as English, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu, reflecting the program's diversity.
The GNI Startups Lab is an acceleration program by Google, focusing on aiding news-based content creators to innovate and develop more inclusive and sustainable business models.
Additionally, Google's GNI initiative in 2023 included other efforts like the GNI India Training Network and Data Dialogue, supporting over 15,000 journalists and journalism students in 15+ languages and impacting 240+ newsrooms and media colleges.
